Adding Line to the Trimmer Head When it is time to add more trimmer line to the ST4000, the first thing to do is make the weed eater safe to work on. Unplug either end of the extension cord so there is no power going to the trimmer. Remove the retainer on the bottom of the trimmer head that holds the spool in place by pressing in on the side tabs. Pull the retainer off and then remove the spool from the trimmer head. Pull off any old line and throw it away. You must replace the string yourself which is cumbersome and takes practice.
