Designed to be lightweight, easy to use and safer for the environment, the ST4000 trimmers require the use of an extension cord to supply power from an electrical outlet. An advantage of the weed eater is its ability to transform into an edger with the simple push of a button. Choosing the right cord is important so the weed eater operates as designed. The cord should be matched to the amperage listed on the trimmer. The length of the cord is also part of the consideration. As a rule of thumb, choose a 14-gauge wire outdoor extension cord that is 100 feet long and plugged into a grounded outdoor 120-volt electrical outlet. Plug the female end of the extension cord into the plug on the ST4000. Double the line about 1 foot back from the plug and insert the loop into the cord keeper slot in the handle. Slip the loop over the knob on the handle to help prevent the cord from coming unplugged while working. Connect the male plug on the other end of the extension cord into a grounded outdoor electrical outlet.

Maintaining the ST4000 Maintenance is fairly straightforward with electrical outdoor equipment and the ST4000 is no exception. Unplug the extension cord and roll it up neatly for use next time to prevent potential damage. Brush grass, dirt, dust and debris from the plastic and metal parts on the weed eater with a stiff bristle brush. Wipe the trimmer down with a damp rag and mild detergent. Avoid getting water into the motor while cleaning. If you do, allow the motor to thoroughly dry before attempting to start it. Adding Line to the Trimmer Head When it is time to add more trimmer line to the ST4000, the first thing to do is make the weed eater safe to work on. Unplug either end of the extension cord so there is no power going to the trimmer. Remove the retainer on the bottom of the trimmer head that holds the spool in place by pressing in on the side tabs. Pull the retainer off and then remove the spool from the trimmer head. Pull off any old line and throw it away. To install new line, cut an 8-foot length of.065-inch diameter trimmer line from a filler spool. Insert one end of the trimmer line length into the small retainer hole in the spool. Wind the line onto the spool in a clockwise direction and leave about 5 inches of the end of the line extending from the spool. You will need to insert the end of the trimmer line through the hole in the trimmer head, push the spool in place in the head and snap the retaining ring in place to secure the spool to the trimmer head. Trimming With the ST4000 Trimming with the ST4000 is designed to be easy and trouble free. First, make sure that the extension cord is securely plugged in and that you are wearing safety glasses. Grip the rear handle and trigger throttle with your dominant hand. Reach forward with your other hand and hold the forward assist handle. Pressing the trigger will supply power to the motor and turn the trimmer head. Tilt the trimmer head slightly forward, press the trigger and swing the ST4000 slowly side to side to cut grass and weeds. When it is time to edge along a driveway or sidewalk, release the trigger and unplug the extension cord. Converting the trimmer to an edger is as simple as pushing the button on the lower end of the trimmer shaft and rotating the trimmer head sideways. You can now plug the extension cord back in and hold the trimmer as before. Guide the rotating trimmer line along hard edges to cut grass and create a neatly trimmed lawn.

I like this one better than my old gas one in every way, and I won't be going back. 40 volts is a lot of juice for an edger. It cuts through weeds and edges along my driveway and walkways without any hesitation. And the battery lasts quite a while. I leave it on the maximum setting 100% of the time, and I can trim around all the trees and natural areas in the yard, and then edge around the back patio, the driveway and the walkways, and still have over 50% battery when I'm done. It is lighter weight and lower maintenance than my old gas edger. You don't have to worry about running to the gas station to refill the gas can. You don't have to put oil in it. You don't have to worry about a spark plug. You don't have to adjust a choke. You don't have to troubleshoot when it won't start. And, the automatic line feeder works surprisingly well. All you have to do is charge the battery (I throw it on the charger right before I start mowing and it's ready by the time I'm ready to edge), throw it in, and pull the trigger. It's really that simple, and it has the power to do everything my old gas one did. Why would I ever go back?Pro: - Light weight and well balanced. - Self feed trimmer wire during operation. - Easy to replace trim wire. - Quick charging battery. - Trigger operation helping to extend working time. Con: - Battery drains quickly. Overall: - Battery drain is a concern with all makes so, considering the price, usability and features this is a very good buy.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again We have an acreage and already own a gas trimmer but I don't like using it as its heavy and awkward. The Black and Decker unit is a nice weight and the battery last long enough for me to trim around the house and flower beds etc.(hubby can use the gas trimmer for the longer jobs). Battery recharges quite quickly but so far the one charge has lasted long enough for what I need.

The only reason I'm giving 4 stars is I haven't owned it long enough to see how it will stand up.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again Zero complaints. It does everything you'd want it to do and does it with great efficiency. For regular weed trimming the lowest setting works perfectly and the charge will last for a full hour. GREAT product!!Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again Level 1 it is ok but can't edge etc. It is light and easy to use for sure - just need to make sure you have small relatively easy lawn to maintain. Just didn't work for what I neededSorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again This thing is perfect. Enough power to cut through things when I'm a little negligent about weed whacking and it's nice and light.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again It is much lighter and easier to use. It assembled quickly with no problems. The battery is very easy to get on and off the Trimmer and the charger. We haven’t used it long enough to fully evaluate the battery life.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again Battery on lowest power draw setting is good for two outings. Does tire the forearms after a while.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again And it does take a while to charge. But coming from a gas whipper snipper, i almost broke down in tears after finishing using it i was so happy. Totally recommend this unit. I have not respooled it yet so can not tell if that will be the problem with it. That can be solve with buying the prespooled ones.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again I would say the battery has been lasting 45 mins per charge. Set up was a breeze.

Adams 1.0 out of 5 stars Alas, it stinks. Really. I live on one-third or so of an acre in the 'burbs. The first time I used it, I went through one entire spool of string. I returned it to Amazon because I thought the feeder must've been broken. Nope. Got the new one and one spool lasted about 1.5 uses. No, I'm not doing big, deep woods brush; I'm just doing light grass trimming around my mailbox and sidewalk.

The only reason I replaced it with this one is because the battery (about the size of a small toaster and twice as heavy) needed to be replaced. One spool of string would last me 2 or 3 MONTHS on that one. If you have a LST136 where a spool lasts you more than 30 minutes, congrats. This thing has great power, is so light, and I'd give it 5 stars if it didn't shred string.Comparison to Dewalt. POWER -Dewalt is a beast of a trimmer. ERGONOMICS -Dewalt is difficult to control due to its length and enormous battery pack. PRECISION -Dewalt is so big and tough to control that you won't have much accuracy with your trimming. Low-medium is strong enough for standard trimming tasks like lawn grasses and small weeds. SAFETY -Dewalt violently sprays particles everywhere because of its power and its tiny guard. Expect to get your legs blasted with vegetable matter. I routinely get stuff sprayed into my face.I have been trimming with the Dewalt weekly and lately almost every session requires me to deal with a string issue of some kind. You must replace the string yourself which is cumbersome and takes practice. The string is stiff and not that malleable which means is difficult to wind it neatly without crossed lines or knots. It worked well for the first 3 months, then the battery stopped holding a charge. Eventually got a new battery, then had the same issue. Figured out it was the charger, so finally got a new charger. On my first use after getting a new battery and new charger the trimmer broke in half. Literally, broke in half. I doubt anyone will see or notice this review because there are thousands of others, but if you do, DO NOT BUY this trimmer. Such a headache and waste of money. I'm going to try my best to return this but I doubt anything will come of it.I've come to terms with it. So, I decided to see what alternatives were out there, and found this. I was a little dubious at first, but decided to give it a shot. The verdict?

Have not had to change the line but it is self advancing which I think is a great feature.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again That includes trimming and edging. If longer grass and more coarse type weeds, a larger unit might be necessary but this one works well for the average homeowner. I also found the unit light to handle and easily fits into tighter areas. Very pleased with power settings as well to conserve battery life.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again He said it is so much easier to use, electric versus starting a gas trimmer.easier on your arm.Sorry, we failed to record your vote.
